I love this program because:
1) It gives a sense of purpose to the inmates and
2) It provides really well trained dogs to families that wanted to
adopt.
The day we adopted River, I got to go into the prison with the other families that were adopting. They had a beautiful graduation ceremony and I got to meet the inmate that trained River.
We also got to hear from
a couple of inmates that spoke at the graduation about the difference the training program has made in their lives.
Afterwards, myself and the other families were encouraged to stay in touch with the inmates... they said they love getting mail and hearing about how the dogs are doing.
So we kept in touch with Michael, the inmate that trained River, over time... and it was amazing to witness the difference it made for him, as well as to learn about how far he had come and how much he had changed over the last 20+ years that he had already been incarcerated.
Having people
in his life that saw him, didn't judge him, and treated him like a valuable human being made a HUGE difference for him.
He thanked us for this in every letter. He told us that we had changed his life.
Anyway, I could go on and on about this story, but mostly I just wanted to mention it to show what's possible for people when someone believes in them.
It's life changing. I saw it happen with my own eyes in this case.
I know that Michael is not the same man that he was when he went to prison 25 years ago. And that some day when he gets out, he will be a blessing to this world.
And I really hope the world is kind to him and gives him a chance.
I have a dear friend named Elizabeth Rice. We call her Mama
Elizabeth because she is the matriarch of our community, our guiding light, and a sage.
She has recently started a program called the R.O.D. Project (Restoring One's Dignity from Incarceration).
It's designed to help people return to the world after being
incarcerated.
This is REALLY important work... and so needed.
Because people DO change and they deserve credit for that and they deserve to be treated accordingly.
I hosted the Grow Rich mastermind call today and I went into more detail about this topic.
I also shared more of River's story, what it was like getting to know Michael, and what it taught me about people in general.
