Hey, Amy here.
Some people say that, in order to be successful, you have to 'niche down'- to find a super specific micro-niche and target a super-specific group of people with your message.
There can definitely be some
truth to this... because if you are super specific you can become the go-to person for that very specific niche or micro niche.
However, I have niched down a few times over the years that I've been marketing online and one of the things I don't like about it is that it feels constraining to me... like I'm putting myself into a box and I can
only talk about things in alignment with a very specific subject matter...
...to make it easy for people to instantly know whether I can benefit them if they pay attention to my content.
So, when we do this, we are really doing it to make it easier for others to define us.
Again, there are definitely benefits to this... but it just never felt good to me.
I don't really want to be defined.
I've always wanted to be able to express myself in different ways and share different things that I thought would be beneficial to people, so this is the way I've mostly done things over the years.
And I have had success doing it this way.
My feeling about it is that you, and your business, and your personality create a natural niche.
YOU are and can be your own niche.
You've heard me talk a ton about my passion for the importance of being authentic and sharing yourself and your story and your journey.
My belief is that when we do this, we define our own niche, and our audience will resonate with us and follow us based on the things that make us who we are.
For example:
- whether you are a man or a woman
- whether you are a parent
- or maybe you are single parent
- the number of kids you have
- maybe you love fitness
- or do martial arts
- or play a certain
sport
- or love a certain sports team
- or play a musical instrument, or sing
And people will also resonate with you based on:
- whether you have clean content, or maybe you swear in your videos
- whether or not you express your political or religious beliefs in your content
- whether you use lots of emojis in your content
- your sense of humor
- and just the way you show up to serve people
So, you really are your own niche... and you don't need to put pressure on yourself to define yourself more specifically, unless you want to and it feels good to you.
Ultimately, it's up to you... if niching down feels better to you, then definitely do that. For
some people, that works better.
There's no right or wrong when it comes to this conversation. And there are pros and cons to both sides of the coin.
