Hey, Amy
here.
My martial arts teacher was telling us a story recently about an experience he had when he was younger that ended up making him the man he is today.
He was talking about how he was working multiple jobs in his early 20's because he had 2 young children at home and a young wife and he wanted to make sure they were taken care of.
He was doing
hard labor and wondering if what he was doing even mattered. He came home exhausted every day and wondered what it was all for.
At the time he didn't know if it mattered, or that it mattered.
But looking at himself 30 years later he realizes that learning how to rise to the occasion and do whatever it takes is what has made him the man he is
today.
It's what has made him unstoppable in the face of his challenges.
And looking at his grown children 30 years later, he realizes it is what has made him a great father, and all of the lessons that those experiences taught his children.
At the time, it didn’t seem significant, or like it really mattered at all.
But it did in the
long run. He didn’t even know it until 30 years later.
He challenged us to question the little things we do in our lives, and to ask,
”Why does it matter?”
He was using some of our techniques in martial arts as an example. Like noticing slight ways we can improve in each of our skills or patterns, and making the adjustments.
Asking 'why does it matter'?
And then remembering that it's always important to do everything in the best way that you possibly can and give it all that you have, rather than just going through the motions.
He promised us that if we pay more attention to the little ways we can be better today, we will see, 30 years from now or sometime in the future, how much it actually really mattered.
So it's a question I've been applying to everything lately... and it really applies to everything.
I'm seeing ways I can do better in lots of areas in my life. I've taken this advice with me into the boxing gym, and into my relationships and into my work.
And it's making a difference... so I wanted to share it with you today.
